What is Alaska Learning Labs?
Alaska Learning Labs (AKLabs)a program of SERRC - Alaska's Educational Resource Center, is a FREE after-school tutoring program that offers 80 one and a half hour sessions and is flexible to meet each site's schedule. For an enhanced learning experience, students earn incentive points for participating in research-based online programs and hands-on activities in reading, writing, and math.

Alaska Learning Labs offers:

  15:1 student-teacher ratio

  45 minutes online activities
  45 minutes hands-on activities
  Family Nights for parent involvement
  Parent and District program reporting

Individual Student Goal Setting
Alaska Learning Labs staff completes a statement of goals for each student using SBA/HSGQE scores and consulting with teachers and the parents.  Independent pre and post assessments are given in reading and math.

Curriculum Materials        
Materials include licenses and enrollment in Compass Learning and Achieve 3000, an award-winning web based literacy program, math games that reinforce basic skills including place value, numeration, operations and math vocabulary. Literacy resources include leveled fiction and non-fiction, chapter books, easy readers, pop up books, reader’s theater, and three dimensional exploration books.  Teacher resource books include ideas for literacy activities, books for read aloud and prompt books for writing and read and respond journaling. Students receive journals that effectively support the writing process through thoughtful journal prompts and structured writing activities.

Training      
Staff will receive training in all program components, including curriculum materials, scheduling and site management, planning family nights, and individual student goal setting.  All trainings will be held in Anchorage, and are based on holding one three hour session Friday evenings, one eight hour session on Saturday and one five hour session on Sunday.

Site visits         
The Alaska Learning Labs Program staff may visit sites to provide additional training, and verify that each program is being implemented for maximum student benefit.

Incentives         
Students earn points by doing academic and parent involvement activities. They order prizes from our online store and receive them in the mail.

Family Nights         
Local Service Providers plan and host two family nights that support parent involvement in student learning.  Costs may include refreshments, materials and LSP pay for planning and hosting the event.  A concluding event is held to celebrate student accomplishments in the program.

Reporting         
Parent Reports are provided three times per year.  The district office will also receive reports to use for board reporting or otherwise three times per year. SES data collecting and formatting for district use is provided annually.
